More and more I am being approached by people who wonder how to relocate to Africa.
Recently, I’ve been approached by many individuals curious about how to relocate to Africa. While some outside the continent may question the decision—wondering why one would make such a move—I believe there are countless compelling reasons to consider it.
Rather than dwell on the potential drawbacks, I’d like to highlight why relocating to Africa can be an excellent choice.
Those who know me well are aware that my journey in Africa began in 2005. However, it took me several years to fully commit to relocating to the continent.
Why?
Although I hold a German passport, which provides privileged access to many countries worldwide, I still encountered limitations, particularly when it comes to the 180-day (tax) mark. To truly live in a country full-time, one needs more than just a passport and a few flight tickets each year.
Here is the solution.
There are basically two options…
1. You get a job
2. You register a company
Let me clarify: in 92% of cases, your profile can be hired locally. This means you’ll be competing for a limited number of available positions. For many local employers, hiring an expatriate—covering work permit costs and meeting salary expectations—may not be an attractive option.
Therefore, relocating with the expectation of securing a lucrative job can be challenging, particularly in an environment where two-thirds of jobs are informal.
So, what can you do?
One effective option is to register a company. If you’re genuinely committed to relocating to an African country, in about 80% of cases, your best bet is to establish a business or make an investment. For instance, in Kenya, where I currently reside, you can obtain a work permit linked to an investment, such as in real estate.
The advantage of this approach is that no one can dictate how successful your company must be. You could generate only a few thousand euros and still justify your presence in the country to manage the business.
Additionally, some countries require proof that no local individual can perform the job you do. However, you likely possess unique skills or language proficiencies that may not be available in your destination country.
Done.
For those living in the diaspora who are eager to return home, what are you waiting for? 😉
You won’t have to go through the hustle of obtaining work permits, or even permanent residence status.
Now you have reached your new home.
What’s next.
This is where it gets interesting.
Invest, invest, invest
Build an investment portfolio.
One significant advantage is that you can buffer against currency fluctuations. You won’t have to worry about converting euros into Kenyan shillings repeatedly; you can invest those euros once and focus on growing your local currency wallet.
Of course, it’s still wise to maintain some assets or investments that can contribute to your foreign exchange account. Once you’ve mastered the local landscape, you’ll be well-prepared for your next steps.
I hope this has sparked your curiosity and prompted you to think more deeply about relocating.
It’s important to acknowledge that making such a move is a significant step. However, once you’ve done it, you may find yourself eager to do it again and again.
The key is to be clear about your reasons for moving to Africa.
For me, it was the pursuit of endless business opportunities. While my thirst for growth continues, I can confidently say that the opportunities I’m now encountering are becoming increasingly abundant.
And here’s the best part: I get to enjoy these opportunities in one of the most breathtaking places on the planet. Waking up to the African sun each morning and being greeted by smiling faces is truly priceless.
