I am sure you can relate to this.
Another invitation to a conference about Africa, another investment summit and uh I forget another FinTech event invitation.
You know exactly what I mean, right?
Unfortunately, I have experienced it many times – especially before COVID. I even paid for some of these events, can you believe it 😳
Why did I do that ❓
I was hoping to get clients, make meaningful connections and learn something.
Has it worked ❓
Well partially 😏
Would I do it again❓
Big NOPE
Here’s what I recommend for anyone building or expanding their company in African markets.
Don’t attend many events, network instead 💡
This is how I do it:
✅ I create a list of things that I am in need of (e.g. industry expertise, access to capital, location etc)
✅ I research where best I can find such people (mostly online)
✅ I start researching which person fits my search criteria
✅ Once I found someone I try to seek an introduction through a mutual connection. This approach is most effective, as direct referrals often lead to stronger relationships
✅ I start engaging the person – IMPORTANT – don’t sell in your first discussions, focus on getting to know the person
Certainly if we think about platforms such as LinkedIn I could add a few more steps. One would certainly be to be commenting on someone’s post (provided they are active) or checking in after some time.
This method really transformed my personal network.
What is important to realise though is that only because you spoke to someone once or sent an email, you are not part of the other persons network. You are simply a connection, if at all.
A good network takes several ‘touch points’ to develop.
Think about it this way, if a random number calls you says ‘Hi, this is Holger’ … you’d likely be left wondering who they are.
Meaning, your aim is form a network that knows who you are.
Let’s network more and spend less time on conferences.
Worked for me 😎
