Have you considered pursuing an MBA? Perhaps you already have one?
To me, an MBA is merely proof of your dedication to hard work and ambition in climbing the corporate ladder.
But if your goal is to do business in Africa and drive meaningful change, an MBA alone won’t help. Investing your time and money in it may not yield the results you seek.
Let me explain a bit more, based on my own experience.
Let me to share my perspective from a decade of experience in African business. While an MBA curriculum can provide valuable structure, it often falls short in helping you execute.
Think about it this way💡
This is what you’ll certainly get:
✅ Advanced skills in leadership, strategy, finance etc
✅ Advanced skills in leadership, strategy, finance etc
✅ Exposure to cases that you’d usually would not get involved in
✅ Enhanced career opportunities (more money)
✅ A paper certificate
✅ A network to great people (provided you went to a good school)
✅ A ‘rat-race’ job in a multinational (as they most likely paid for it)
Now let’s circle back a little and think about how the above helps you to solve complex problems in African markets?
🚫 The case studies you solved were probably global ones
🚫 The theories you applied were developed in industrial countries
🚫 The lectures who taught you were not success business people in their first life (hopefully you went to a school that hires guest lecturers and practitioners)
If you want to be successful in any African market. You will need to need to understand…
✅ The power of relationships and how to use them
✅ How to read between the lines
✅ How to win a chess game without your horse and two of your towers
I often refer to it as the ‘art of doing business’ on the continent. Without it, you will struggle. While theories and international practices have value, they must be localized to meet the specific needs of the market.
Still want to do an email, or will you join me in graduating from the ‘Street MBA’.
